Our history

The Ellevio brand was born in 2015, but our history begins as early as the 1600s. Through our two business areas – electricity distribution and energy solutions – we take an active role in creating an electrified, sustainable society. Here you can read about our history and important milestones.

Ställverket Värtan i Hjorthagen i Stockholm. Som det såg ut en gång.
The Värtan substation in Hjorthagen in Stockholm. As it once looked.

We have a long history, even if the brand is not that old. When hydropower began to be used to streamline work in Sweden's mill towns, the business that has developed into today's Elevio was also born. It started at Uddeholms Bruk in 1668 and has since grown through Billeruds Bruk, Kraftaktiebolaget Gullspång-Munkfors and Stockholm Energi, among others.

Key milestones

2023

  • The new 12-kilometre-long "motorway for electricity" between Beckomberga and Bredäng will be inaugurated in Stockholm. New electrical cables have been buried in the ground and laid at the bottom of Lake Mälaren.
  • The multi-year work to install second-generation smart electricity meters at all customers is completed.
  • The Group establishes itself in Norrbotten through the acquisition of Markbygden Net.
  • The 2023 electricity network report estimates the need for electricity network investments to be almost SEK 1 billion by 2045. At the same time, electricity use in Sweden is expected to more than double.

2022

  • Ellevio will have a new owner when the pension manager AMF buys 12.5 percent of the shares from Första AP-fonden.

  • The Energy Solutions business area is launched to help companies transition to an electrified, fossil-free business. The business is not covered by the electricity grid regulation and is operated by Ellevio Energy Solutions AB.

2021

  • Edbsyns Elverk is acquired and the electricity network business gains around 4,000 new electricity network customers.
  • The reconstruction of the Värtan substation in Hjorthagen, Stockholm, begins. The project, which is due to be completed in 2026, is the largest and most complex station project that Ellevio has carried out to date.
  • Ellevio receives three fine awards as an employer; awarded Sweden's most attractive employer award from Nyckeltalsinstitutet, Håll Nollan's work environment award for our safety work and the Career Company award by Karriärföretagen.

2020

  • We buy Hamra Sparnaðsskog electricity network and get about 500 new customers.
  • We are embarking on our biggest project to date; to rebuild the power line between Beckomberga and Bredäng in Stockholm to strengthen and modernize the electricity grid to meet future electricity needs.

2019

We are launching a new model to be able to build more charging stations. Now it will be easier, faster and cheaper to connect charging stations to the electricity grid.

2018

  • We are the first energy company to join the construction industry's safety initiative Keep Zero. The initiative has a clear goal of reducing the number of workplace accidents on construction sites, a goal that goes hand in hand with our goals and vision.
  • We sign an agreement with GodEl, who will be assigned electricity retailers for our moving customers. The collaboration means, among other things, that customers are offered one of the market's best prices on eco-labelled electricity.

2017

We acquire Elverket Vallentuna and thus gain around 14,500 new customers and a number of new colleagues in September 2018.

2016

We acquire Nynäshamn Energi, which will be integrated into our operations in 2017.
